Remember where you were

In 1990, I was about to compete in a high school track championship at UCONN Storrs when they announced on the loudspeaker that the Gulf War had started.

On September 11, 2001, My husband woke me from our bed in San Diego, CA to tell me the horrifying news. I screamed at him, "You're not f#$** funny, that doesn't happen in America!"

In March 2003, I was sitting in a hotel room in Boston, crying, watching, Bush's Shock and Awe strike on Iraq.

On November 4, 2008 I cried tears of joy in our home in Vancouver, WA:

beautiful post.

i was at home in NE portland and got on IRC first thing. someone posted a link to a screenshot of the CNN broadcast and i thought it was photoshopped - a joke. i went to another chat room and another. they were all talking about cnn and new york.

for the opening attack in bagdad i was in Thailand watching it happen on the news. i read about crowds storming onto I84 and blocking traffic.

on Nov 4th '08 i was at the greendragon adding to the noise of the bar going wild when NBC called the election for Obama.

Many tears were shed at our house and all over America when Obama was elected.

But I remember the other things too. We were on our way home for the first gulf war. I cried all the way home. Baghdad was no longer a magic place, were Aladdin held the magic lamp.

When we got home, The Boss's "WAR" went on as loud as we could crank it up, the neighbors piled out of their houses and asked what the hell we were doing. We said this was our way of mourning. Our kids got what we were doing, but I guess once again we were the add men out in the neighborhood. They didn't expect that kind of thing form us. We had always been the party entertainment, dancing Cotton Eyed Joe, and the shodish for our neighborhood parties. Ask CK, she will tell you.

I pray that we are in for better time eventually, but there is a lot of work and sacrifice ahead for all of us.

Succinctly well said.

I still have last Wednesday's newspaper headline (entire first section, really) on my desk at school.

Good news feels so refreshing.

Wonderful post.

I remember that track tournament. Where were we? I just remember sitting in the bleachers thinking of my parents.

Were we at the armory?
