Teach what you know

Tonight I will meet some other Type 1 diabetics for a Supper Club type meetup. I asked the organizer why it's called a Supper Club if we are meeting at a restaurant (rather than making supper together), but she just looked at me with that "Oh, Lia, you are so anal." face I get a lot.

Besides being happy to meet some other Type 1 diabetics (I only know 5). I plan on picking their brains for my upcoming presentation at CyborgCamp on December 6, 2008.

My goals for the presentation include:

1) Continuing to talk even if I start crying.
2) Making at least one person snort-laugh.
3) Educating others on what it's like to be attached to an insulin pump 24/7.
4) Providing some hands on time with insulin pumps and glucose monitors.

Good for you. My uncle has struggled all his life w/ Type 1 Diabetes, I know it can be hard. If you want those two meters that I got for free to use during your presentation, let me know and I'll send them to you.

Good for you Lia! I know someone who'd come to your presentation... well two someones... but a guest too. Can anyone come? How much is the cost?

Oh Lia I wish you lived where I live. I think that you are so awesome for being as proactive as you are. We have a huge community of young diabetics up here who simply do not take care of themselves, and do not have anyone who tells them that they CAN manage their diabetes. I see them, all too often at work, and I try my best. But I don't have the disease, and what I say really doesn't mean much to them....

I think it's really fantastic that you're doing all this. I bet you'll do just great!

cami: Thank you. (also not in a snarky tone).

Lori:Thanks but I am all set!!

Lauren: All the info is on cyborgcamp.org!

mielikki: I gotta tell ya'. The most influential doctors, nutritionists, etc., have been those that are actually Type 1 themselves. Hopefully I can post a video of my presentation!

Lindy: Thanks!

Dec 6 is, like, right around the corner! Yikes! You'll do great.

Thanks for the feedback on my postcard. I emailed you. Did you get it? It's the email that says thanks for the feedback on my postcard.

David and I have two close friends with Type 1 Diabetes and insulin pumps (one even wrote a book about it: http://preview.tinyurl.com/5d4pz6) and they were both nice enough to let me poke, prod and ask endless questions about their cyborg-like state.

Having the pump to focus on allowed me to ask questions that I had never been brave enough to ask (the type 1 diabetic I went to high school with was very secretive with her needles and occasional mid-class sugar boosts) and learn a huge amount. I learned about endocrine systems, how glucose levels affect all of our body systems, and just how amazing a fully functional pancreas is as a regulator.

Bravo for the confidence to share the wonders of modern medicine with our community.

I know another one. It's this guy who works at Walgreens in their tools division. He even has this badass tattoo on his forearm that says "DIABETIC" with the medic snake.

Thank you for your wonderful presentation. It was especially interesting to those viewing remotely. One of the most memorable and thoughtful speeches of the day.
