YOU: "But, Lia, I just worked out and I need to replenish fluids."
ME: "Did you workout for more than an hour? Are you a endurance or ultra endurance athlete?"
YOU: "Um, no. But I'm thirsty. And I worked so hard."
ME: "Drink water, stupid. If you drink a 32 fl. oz bottle of Gatorade, you will drink 200 calories. If you drink a 20 oz. bottle of Powerade, you will consume 195 calories, a bottle of VitaminWater has 125. Why un-do your hard work?
YOU: "Umm, but it tastes better than water."
ME: "Yes, I know it does. It's because it's pure sugar. Want to know how I know this?"
YOU: "Not really, but I have a feeling you will tell me anyway."
ME: "True. Because, when I am having an insulin reaction (my blood sugar is dropping) and I need fast acting sugar, purer than table sugar, purer than apple juice or candy, I drink GATORADE. (And all I need is a cup of it to send my blood sugar soaring back up.)"
YOU: "You are so smart."

I have to defend the company that signs my paycheck. Gatorade has only 50 calories in an 8 ounce serving. A full 32oz bottle has 200 calories.
I drink it because I like how my sweat turns to colorful drops.
Smart lady.
Scott,
How can one just stop at a quarter of the bottle? Come on!
It really is a 200 calorie product.
Thank you, Lia, and don't forget that water is free. All those so-called sports drinks mean $2 less spent on caffeinated beverages, but you have other thoughts on that, no?
Yes, I felt so cheated when I learned this...the commercials make it out to be good for you....which it is if you run a 10k but otherwise...water indeed.
Though Crystal Light is ok I think.
I have known that Gatorade is not the best for rehydration. Great post.
Mark...
True. Just want to make sure that we don't lose any of "Ms. Burrows" millions of readers to the competition due to a misprint.
Miss Burrows,
Agree that water is the best for you for hydration. There is no denying that. However, isotonics like Gatorade replenish the electrolytes you lose during sport, workout, or other physical exertion. Contrary to popular belief, Gatorade is not just for elite athletes, does not have caffiene nor does it claim to be healthy. It only claims to rehydrate and replenish, which it does.
Other lower calorie options:
G2 by Gatorade - 25cal/8oz
Propel - 10cal/8oz
SoBe Life Water 0cal - 0cal/8oz
Aquafina Flavor Splash - 0cal/8oz
Sorry for the long post, but want to help clear up any erroneous information
You are so (gulp) smart and you (glug) are correct that (slurp) water (swallow) is better for you but it is (gulp) so tasty... ;)
I actually try to only drink it when I have been sweating for a long time and need/want the sugar.

Boys, boys, boys! There is no need to fight!! :)
Scott-You are right, I had the wrong number down. I have now corrected it.
Jake: No wonder you need all those surgeries.
Lisa: *shrugs*
Mark: My point exactly.
Silly: Me? Thoughts? What??? :)
Lilacspecs: Crystal Light has zero to low carbs so I drink that stuff a lot.
Mie: I'm sure it is great for hydration, but only a few of us will ever need it for that.
Scott: Gatorade's G2 was created because consumers are balking at all the calories in normal Gatorade. (And all the other companies are doing the same, it's not just Gatorade.)
Like I stated, Gatorade is the best thing to drink for a diabetic insulin reaction.
Since there must be more diabetics than elite athletes why not market to the diabetics?
Stu: You are such a pain in the ass. :)
Whateva.. pfftt..
;)
